Air pollutants damage materials by abrasion, direct or indirect chemical attack, electrochemical corrosion, and deposition and removal of particulates. Other environmental factors that influence air pollution damage to materials include moisture, salt particles, temperature, sunlight, and air movement. The effects of air pollutants on ferrous metals, nonferrous metals, protective coatings, and elastomers are discussed and quantified. Economic estimates of damage are made. Controls on emissions of damaging pollutants (notably sulfur dioxide) have reduced pollution related costs in the past 10 years. -- AATA
