Very little has been penetrated in regard with the methods and materials used by the Spanish restorers of any time and nothing, therefore, is known as to the restoring tradition of our painters. This lack of interest on the side of our historiographers and painting technicians has been, throughout the centuries, the reason for the most scarce bibliography we know in regard with this field. It is possible, however, that there will be some documents, in the Museums, Cathedrals and Churches archives mainly, constituting the history of painting restoration in Spain, although we dare to assume that, if we take for reference the manuals or recipe books published in regard thereto, our restorers techniques and the materials of common usage have been of oral transmission, or either have been hidden as shop secrecy. This paper discusses the two books found on restoration by de Polero and de la Roca, the republishing of them, and what kind of information is in the two books.
