Abstract
The Virgen de las Angustias is a sculpture made of wood and fully polychromated. This is a masterpiece among the sculptural production of individual figures by Juan de Juni and its execution may be dated around the year 1570. It is in the Penitentiary Church of the Angustias (to which brotherhood it belongs) of Valladolid, from where it was sent to the I.C.R., Madrid, in April 1970, for a treatment to preserve and restore it. The preservation and restoration treatment applied to the piece in the Sculpture Section of the I.C.R. by the restorers, brothers Cruz Solis, consisted mainly of the following steps, as it may be gathered through the report existing in the Institute files: 1st. Desinsectation of the wood. 2nd. Consolidation of all parts lacking of adjustment, placing in the widest opening fine wooden wedges attached with vinile poliacetate adhesive. 3rd. Cleaning of the surfaces, using solvents mainly composed of butilamine and n,n' dimetilformamide. 4th. Some broken disturbing areas were stucco-plastered. 5th. The stucco was coloured, matching the colour with the adjacent areas. 6th. Application of a final varnishing.
