Abstract
The article treats the artistic and aesthetical aspects of the restoration process which are a very specific part of the restoration theory. The author shows that the aesthetical value of a monument depends not only on its artistic features but on preservation of its authenticity as well. As it is pointed out in the article a work of art can perform its gnosiological function as an objective source of information if it preserves its genuine aesthetical qualities. Personal interference of the restorer into the structure of an image can spoil the aesthetic value of a cultural monument belonging to the previous ages. Thus it acquires the artistic features of a modern copy.
