This report describes the information currently available to the conservation community concerning preventive conservation and the care and maintenance of cultural collections. It is the culmination of several months work spent assembling and evaluating relevant material for this purpose. This report also recommends which training material available on the institutional and commercial market the Canadian Parks Service should acquire and which possible directions the production of the proposed National Collection Management System Training modules should pursue in the future. This information collection and assessment process of the National Collection Management System Training Program is one phase in the planning and production of training modules that will take several years to complete. These training modules will substantially fulfill the objectives of the National Collection Management System Training Program and thereby provide the required in-depth training of Canadian Parks Service personnel involved in the nationwide implementation of the Parks Collection Management System. As a result of worldwide surveying of the currently available training material a substantial amount of information has been collected and evaluated. In addition, a number of conclusions and recommendations can be made. All of this data is presented and assessed in detail in the following pages of this report. To date there is no comprehensive series of training videos for the training of non-conservators in the care of collections in existence. The production of these proposed training modules will have a significant impact throughout the conservation community and the entire collection management system of the Canadian Parks Service for many decades.
