Conservation of composite objects, like fabrics ornamented with metal threads, is always a difficult problem. Effective agents for metal generally do harm to core yarns, ground fabric, or needlework pads. No solution is possible other than by compromise. The authors examined the effect of several cleaning methods on metal threads by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
