Abstract
Watercolor miniature portrait painting on ivory was very common in the 18th and 19th centuries. The major difficulty in miniature restoration comes from the fragility of the support: the ivory plates are usually less than 0.5 mm thick and are very sensitive to climatic variations. Fissures or cracks should be treated by fixing strips of Japanese paper with animal glue on the reverse side. A small transparent press made of Plexiglas was designed to solve the delicate problem of reattaching tiny loose parts. The press is adjusted with brass nuts and bolts and a special clamping device, and is adaptable to oval as well as rectangular formats.
