Abstract
The examination and analysis of these 17 prehistoric human fecal specimens from Mammoth Cave are significant because the results can be used to infer certain probable diet practices and seasonality. The pollen evidence suggests that dandelion flowers and/or their leaves may have been eaten as part of the diet. Pollen from the flowers of liliaceous plant and the flower of sweetflag indicate that these flowers also were used as food. Composite pollen in some specimens corresponds well with the presence of composite seeds in the same specimens. This apparent correlation adds strength to the assumption that both sumpweed and sunflower seeds were occasionally eaten. However, the strongest correlation in the paleofecal remains between away specific pollen type and seeds from the same plant is that of chenopod. As noted earlier, there is ample evidence to support the conclusion that the presence of large amounts of Cheno-Am pollen in paleofecal material is generally an excellent clue to chenopod seed usage.
