Abstract
Contains detailed discussion of twenty-three English painting treatises, dating from 1573 to1700, covering miniature and easel portrait painting. Excerpts from the treatises are presented detailing which materials were recommended and how the colors were to be mixed and applied. At the end of the discussion of each treatise the author provides an outline of which materials were mentioned. The ten tables at the end of the book are an extremely valuable compilation of what pigments, binders, supports, studio equipment, etc. were recommended in each treatise. -- AATA
