Abstract
The painting St. Thomas of Villanueva healing a cripple by Murillo was examined scientifically to study the techniques of this painter. The method of underpainting the people and the background architecture could be recognized and documented. The technique of applying the pigments (white-lead, lead-tin-yellow, verdigris, smalt, azurite, vegetable black) is described in detail, as well as the type of medium. The results are compared with the examination of other Spanish paintings.
