Abstract
Problems encountered with the chemical conservation of the Ajanta paintings include deterioration of paint and varnish layers, occurrence of whitish incrustation, dark accretions and bats' excreta on painted portions, unfavorable environmental conditions, and insect activity, etc. The treatment of the decayed portion and methods of controlling the deterioration factors are specified. Photographic illustrations show the painting before treatment and after treatment. -- AATA
