Until the 18th century pigments and dyestuffs were used in painting which had been known for centuries. In the 18th and 19th centuries a great number of new pigments were invented and introduced, replacing some of the pigments used in earlier times. In the 20th century only a few pigments were added to the painters palette, while the number of synthetic dyestuffs was considerably enlarged. -- AATA
