Abstract
The recent advances in computer processing of images and the development of electronic detectors have made possible the development of digital radiographic techniques. These processes which replace the ordinary silver halide film with electronic detectors have great potential in the analysis of objects of art, especially paintings. The ability to distinguish very small differences in attenuation characteristics provides the possibility of quantitative analysis of pigment. The very sophisticated image processing techniques that have been de veloped for the space industry and medicine also may be applied to the analysis of paintings through the use of the digital radiographic images, and these techniques are described. -- AATA
