Abstract
A translation into Norwegian of the guild regulations of 1268 for sculptors (image carvers), painters, and tin, silver and gold leaf beaters; and of those of 1391 for painters and sculptors. The translation is based on, and presented parallel to, the Old French and Middle French texts published by Lespinasse and Bonnardot in 1879 and 1892. In a commentary, the passages on materials and techniques are interpreted in relation to other written sources of the period, and to the results of some recent technical examinations of medieval painting and polychrome sculpture. The gilding techniques are discussed in particular, including the use of silver, tin and the possible use of laminated gold/silver leaves (so called or parti/Zwischgold).
