The private collector can do many things to protect his books and manuscripts by improving the environmental and storage conditions under which his collections are kept. He can also minimize and control the use of his collections--something a library can never hope to do. Once the collection as a whole has been safeguarded, steps can be taken to see what individual items are cared for.
