Abstract
Original pigmented surfaces are often removed from terracotta sculptures in the erroneous belief that they are later restorations or a result of cleaning methods which are too harsh and abrasive. During the 18th-century pigmentation was generally monochromatic, and the reasons for these coatings are outlined. The types of painted surface commonly found in European 18th-century terracottas are discussed and a range of available cleaning methods is assessed.
