Abstract
Gives a preliminary assessment of the damage caused by Projekt Osterinsel when taking silicone molds of two monolithic statues in Rano Raraku quarry on Easter Island. The entire stone surface of each statue was impregnated with methyl cellulose before the silicone rubber was applied. When the hardened silicone was removed, a portion of the entire stone surface of each statue was also removed. The color of the remaining stone was completely altered. Further studies are needed to better qualify the extent of the damage and to find corrective measures. It is suggested that the professional and ethical standards of this project are in need of review.
