Abstract
Leather dressing of deteriorated bindings had long been practised, but not altogether satisfactorily. The article discusses why this should have been such a widely adopted practice and concludes that it was probably only a transfer of a long-practised habit for shoes, harness, etc. to leather on books. Recipes for leather dressings, 1795, 1879, 1890 are reprinted.
