Today examination of cross-sections by reflected light microscopy is more or less a standard procedure in connection with restoration and conservation of pictorial art. Cross-sections give information about pigments, binding-media, varnish-layers and overpaints as well as deterioration-phenomena with the paint layers. For the embedding of the samples many different methods and materials are used. Also the grinding and polishing process has been performed by various means and methods.
