Abstract
Treatment of objects must conform to ethical as well as technical standards. The necessary preliminary examination must reveal the documentary importance. Only well-tested materials should be used. Operations must be theoretically planned in advance. If possible, processes must be reversible. These principles are illustrated with examples concerning stone objects, panel paintings, metals. The article also dwells on the necessity and problems of documentation. See also 16-194. -- AATA
