Abstract
ICCROM was founded in 1959. The training of restorers is very expensive; multidisciplinary collaboration is necessary. Old technologies must be studied, the causes and mechanisms of deterioration understood. Conservation has universal principles and methodology. Priorities must be determined according to cultural and use values, insecurity of the object, damage, and disfigurement. Prior to treatment inventories and documentation must be established. Degrees of conservation: prevention of deterioration, preservation, consolidation, restoration, reproduction, reconstruction, re-evaluation. See also 16-194. -- AATA
