Abstract
The brilliant green color in Basohli paintings is found to be not a pigment painted over the surface but something cut into various shapes and fixed over the paintings. The author analyzed a sample from a piece of Rajasthani textile containing an identical green in it. Wet analysis, chemical microscopy and spot tests indicated that the green color was due to proteinaceous matter and was in fact the exoskeleton of the beetle, Rosechafer (cetonia -- aurata, Scarabaseidae, Coleoptera). This confirmed a general premise that beetle wings were used for the brilliant green in Basohli paintings.
