Abstract
Causes of deterioration and various methods of treatment of palm leaf manuscripts are described. Palm leaves used for writing, either the thick and nonabsorbent tala, or the thin and paper-like sritala, are subject to deterioration caused by improper handling or storage, brittleness, and insect damage. The text can also become illegible. Treatments described include fumigation with thymol and paradichlorobenzene; methods for making a text legible again; chemical or mechanical cleaning of the leaves; separation of leaves which are stuck together; and lamination.
