Abstract
The Aboriginal Training Program in Museum Practices (ATPMP) is a project within the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) that offers Aboriginal participants professional and technical training in various aspects of museum work. It is designed for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individuals who work in local/regional museums or cultural centres in their communities and wish to broaden their knowledge and skills. The program (now in its 15th year) operates from September to April each year. As part of the curriculum, the participants have the opportunity to spend a short period (4–5 weeks) training with conservators from CMC’s Conservation Section. The conservation work focuses on basic principles and hands-on preventive conservation practices. Upon completion of the program, many interns return to their communities to work in a cultural capacity. Several have taken the initiative to further their studies in professional conservation practices. The CMC conservators involved in this program have also benefited, often gaining knowledge from the ATPMP interns that has changed the way they approach their work with ethnographic objects.
