Abstract
This paper begins with a discussion of the history and technique of shaped crayon portraits followed by two treatment approaches in response to some of the wide variety of problems these types of object may present. The first is a description of a conservation treatment including the washing, reshaping, infilling and inpainting of a salted paper portrait which was in extremely poor condition. The second includes an experimental method, using laser imaging, to produce made-to-measure shaped frame spacers to accommodate permanent distortions in more fragile silver gelatine portraits in relatively good condition.
