Abstract
As the extensive literature of the mycology of the leather industry is dispersed in articles published over a number of years, it was thought that an attempt to co-ordinate it would be of considerable value: the result is the present article which forms, at least, an efficient guide to the literature. Articles cited in the review are listed in Literature cited : those which, though relevant, have for various reasons, not been cited, are listed in an Additional Bibliography. Compilation of references has been facilitated by reviews of Chambard & Belperron, and Whalley; moreoever, much helpful advice has been received from colleagues. It is proposed to treat the subject under four headings: firstly, some general account of the biology of industrial fungi with special reference to those occurring in the leather industry; secondly, a more detailed account of the fungi associated with the main processes of leather manufacture and its raw materials; thirdly, a short review of the methods available for the control of fungi in the industry; and fourthly, a general summary and co-ordination. No account of bacteria will be included. -- CCI
