Abstract
This article deals with absorption spectra in the ultraviolet region of resins collected by punch method from the trunks of various species of coniferous trees. All the resins we have examined are conclusively readjusted in four groups, judged on the ground of the types of absorption curves observed. The characteristics of each group are as follows: Group I. All the resins in this group exhibited two characteristic absorption bands at 241 and 250 mmu, which are always found in the case of resins containing abietic type resin acids as main components. On isomerization of the resins in alcoholic hydrochloride solution, strong specific absorption band at 241 mmu for abietic acid was observed in all cases. Group II. Resins in this group showed two maximal absorption bands at 231 and 285 mmu, respectively. Group III. All the resins in this group showed positive ferric chloride test for phenolic materials, and exhibited a strong absorption band at 281 mmu as well as a weak band near 305 mmu. In alkaline solution, these bands were displaced towards longer wave-lengths. Group IV. The type of absorption curve in this group was different from those of the other three groups. No characteristic absorption bands were observed in the region between 220 and 300 mmu. Only the resin from Araucaria imbricata, among all measured, belonged to this group. -- CCI
