Abstract
This journal article describes types and causes of damage and deterioration, and techniques for repairing and restoring antique woodwind instruments. Specific topics include separating and soaking (cleaning) joints, warpage, loose ferrules, causes of cracking, repairing split joints and wide cracks, glues and adhesives (epoxy, resorcinal formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde, aliphatic resins), sealing keys, wood preservative treatments (e.g. polyethylene glycol (PEG), various oils, plastic finishes, Scott's Liquid Gold), relapping tenons, and corks for headjoints. This article is a reference for the conservation of musical instruments.
