Abstract
Philosophical discussion on the aesthetic principles invoked to justify the restoration of art objects. Two arguments in favor of restoration as understood by the advocates of the integral as well as the purist schools of thought are presented. One is to restore the original aesthetic appeal lost or diminished through age, accident, or vandalism. The second is to consider history, agedness, as deceptive, and freshness as expressing the quality of the original. These arguments are shown to be incomplete. The reason why we respect the kind of unique integrity a work of art possesses in its original condition is further discussed and its ramifications explored. It is a broad issue of cultural significance summarized in a quote by Cesare Brandi.
