Abstract
Two varieties of Period IV Geometric polychrome ware from Mehrgahr Level C-7 have been examined to identify the pigments and techniques of the polychrome decoration. One type of ware is characterized by a white background. Examination under a binocular microscope shows that the buff body has been coated with a white slip, the red design painted over the white background and then the black design painted on over the red. The second type of ware is characterized by a red background that examination shows was applied as a slip and then overpainted, first with white and then with black. Examination of the Mehrgarh Period IV polychrome ware indicates that the white pigment is a pure sort of pipe clay that does not sinter and densify at 1000 degrees C, the firing temperature of this ware. The red pigment is a red ochre consisting of a mixture of fine particle size hematite and quartz, while the black pigment is a natural manganese containing iron oxide spinel. The ware was fired in air at a temperature near 1000 degrees C.
