Abstract
Recent restorations of paintings in Italy and Spain are discussed, with comments on how previous concepts regarding coloristic styles must now be altered. The Sistine and Brancacci Chapel treatments are briefly described with color photographs. The proto-sfumato/smoke effects ascribed to Masaccio may have been fire damage dating from 1771. Decorative borders with small heads have been uncovered in the Brancacci Chapel.Colors revealed in the cleaning of Veronese's Feast in the House of Levi and Velázquez's Las Meninas are described and illustrated with before and after color pictures and details. Controversies are mentioned and pentimenti described.
