Abstract
Answering the question, how can small museums and private collectors recognize qualified practitioners, Mrs. Keck cites the standards for professional competence published by the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, American Group, which are available from the IIC -- American Group, c/o New York University Conservation Center, 1 East 78th Street, New York, N. Y. 10021 for approximately $1.50. Respect for the integrity of the original object and limitation of treatment procedures to only reversible methods are prime factors of good preservation, to which must be added a thorough knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of the materials of art objects acquired only during a long and intensive training. No speed course in restoration can teach the complexities of conservation and produce a qualified practitioner.
