Abstract
Historically, a variety of materials have been used for labelling in vertebrate collections, including metals, leather, parchment, plastics, wood, and paper. Problems related to inappropriate materials are loss of data and damage to specimens. Methods of reducing damage to labels and to specimens include proper tying of labels and preliminary testing of all materials used in labelling. Polyester film envelopes designed to protect old or fragile labels are illustrated.
