Abstract
Ferrous artifacts may have been manufactured from wrought iron, steel or cast iron. Heating such artifacts can cause changes in their metallurgical structures. The effects of heating and cooling ferrous material in different atmospheres is studied and recommendations made concerning types of ferrous artifacts which should never be subjected to elevated temperatures.
