Abstract
The following is a progress report of the analysis of historical bricks from Corinella. This analysis commenced in early 1982 and is ongoing. The Study forms part of a broader archaeological programme being undertaken by the Victoria Archaeological Survey under the direction of Dr. P. Coutts. The analysis of the bricks was requested by Dr. Coutts to establish 1. Which bricks were of local manufacture and made during the first settlement of Corinella in 1826; 2. The brickmaking techniques of this early local industry; and 3. Which of the suggested local clay pits was (were) in fact the source of brick clay for this early local industry. Forty six whole and part bricks were submitted for analysis. These bricks were collected from buildings, private collections and excavations in the vicinity of the township of Corinella. The original date and place of manufacture for these bricks is not known. One fragment of brick made in the mid 1820s and came from the Hyde Park Barracks, Sydney. It was included as an example of a typical Sydney brick and possibly similar to those which are recorded as having been imported into Corinella on the Isabella. This report details all the findings and results of the study to June 1983, so as to provide some short term results for workers at the site, to put the analysis in the perspective of the broader study and highlight the analytical problems encountered for future research.
