Abstract
Describes the history, condition, and restoration of a polyptych by Simone da Firenze, 1523, in Senise, Potenza, Italy. Carved from poplar wood, gilded, and painted, it was restored in 1930. Despite this, the wooden tablets warped, the wood lost cohesion, paint became detached from the figures, and decorative parts and portions of carving were lost. Recent restoration involved disassembly, treatment with Xylamon biocide, consolidation with Paraloid B-72, and substitution of the old support by a new wooden frame, facilitating disassembly. The paint was consolidated with adhesive using a heated spatula, wax, and resin. Old varnish and overpaint were removed with light solvents such as chloroform, diethyl ether, and xylene. the final varnish was made up from dammar and a ketone resin.
