Abstract
Reports the restoration of the wood of Lippo di Benivieni's painted cross, from the Santa Croce museum, Florence (Italy), which was seriously damaged by the 1966 flood. Owing to the damage it sustained, it was necessary to remove the paint by cutting the colour from the support: the complex operations involved were described in the proceedings of earlier conference. This paper presents the restoration of the wooden part of the support, which was disassembled, since the parts glued together had lost their adhesion after immersion in water in 1966. Each part was restored with wedges and plugs of the same wood species, seasoned and placed in the same direction as the fibres of the original missing parts were integrated and particular attention was paid to create a reversible system for the area of crossing between the vertical and horizontal members. The whole structure was disinfected with methyl bromide and protected with Paraloid B72.
