Abstract
The article outlines the state of conservation and restoration of a 16th c. carved walnut wood choir with intarsio work, in Maratea (Italy). The structure and decoration were in a state of extreme degradation with many missing parts owing to the pulverization of the wood caused by the repeated attacks of insects; the colors and intarsios were invisible, coated by drying oil and other paint. The restoration began with a preliminary covering with tissue paper, the numbering of its individual parts, disassembly, the construction ex novo of the footboard and of the bearing structures, cleaning, restoration of the intarsios, reconstruction of missing carving, consolidation with Paraloid B72, reassembly on site, infilling, painting, and final coat of varnish.
