The article describes the restoration of the altar of the Madonna in the church of the Rosary in Tramutola, Potenza (Italy), made of carved, gilded wood and decorated with fake marbles with painted panelling and a central sculpture. The altar was built in 1671. Both its load bearing structures and decoration had deteriorated, with losses of carvings, mouldings and paint layers. The altar was disassembled, missing parts recontructed and a new, more rational assembly system created so that any part may be reached without dismantling the whole. Cleaning, reconstruction of part of the missing carvings, strengthening with Paraloid B72, infilling, gilding, and restoration of the painted scenes were then carried out.
