The floor structure of the Accademia delle Belle Arti, Florence, Italy, comprising wooden beams which are sound but inadequate dimensionally, was strengthened by interposing new beams of lamellar wood between the original beams and by creating a reinforced-concrete slab working in with the rest of the structure. Upgrading to standards was achieved by the placement of a closed metal peripheral structure.
