Abstract
The mother church of Massafra was substantially rebuilt between 1533 and 1541, but its original structure may go back to the 14th century. It contains important works of the 17th and 18th centuries, including a wood choir with 34 stalls, Baroque altars, and a monumental macchina of gilt and painted wood, with a base diameter of 9.05 m and a height of 11.90 m. Of importance too are several wooden statues: a San Lorenzo from the 15th century, a Saint Michael archangel of 1721, and a reliquary bust of San Lorenzo. Two paintings on wood are kept in the sacristy, a Madonna with angels, and a Risen Christ of the 15th-16th centuries.
