Abstract
A brief outline of the history and restoration of the decorated wood celing and walls in the oratorio of St. Bernardino, Siena, Italy. The coffered boarding and the wall framing - comprising twelve pilaster strips with an overlying frieze in gilded papier maché - which frames the fresco cycle painted by Domenico Beccafumi, Sodoma and Girolamo del Pacchia, were commissioned to Maestro Ventura of ser Giuliano di Tura in a contract dated December 21st 1496. The work was finished in 1515. The recent (1980-82) restoration involved repairing the roof to prevent damage to the frescoes from rainwater and supplementing the support for the ceiling beams by connecting the longitudinal joists with steel tie cables to a second set of steel T beams inserted in the space below the roof.
