Neither the composition and preparation of the varnishes for the best violins from the years 1600-1750 nor the reason for their sudden decline can be explained. The possibilities for the preparation of clear or colored varnishes from materials available then or now and the reasons for the preparation of the classical varnishes being forgotten are discussed.
