Abstract
In addition to the record container developed for the U.S. National Archives and described by A. E. Kimberly <i>(American Archivist 13 (1950) pp. 233-266) there have been developed for the National Archives and Records Service a special document container which is made of 100% Kraft stock, 200 lbs. minimum bursting strength;. 060 inches thickness, a minimum opening and closing test of 250 and adherence to water soluble adhesive. The box is cut and scored from a single piece of paper board with a cover hinged along the full length of the back wall. It is made in two sizes (1) letter size 12S4 long, 10S4 high and 5 wide: (2) legal size 15S4 long, 10S4 high and 5 wide. A variant of this container is covered with a thin skin of aluminum foil, to make it fire-resistant. The slotted type Records Center carton is made of corrugated fiber board and is of 1-piece construction. 1 and 2 is standardized in one principal size, 15 long, 12 wide and 10 high and is secured by staples of stitching wire spaced not more than 2 -- 1/2 apart. It is best suited for records in inactive storage. -- AATA
