Abstract
The castings were found together 25 years before. The anvil was examined with the object of determining whether it had been used in antiquity. The patina, the metal composition, and its structure at a bulge were examined and comparison made with the behaviour of a known similar alloy. It was concluded that the anvil could be a copy of an earlier much-used anvil of softer metal or a casting from a whittled wooden pattern. The palstave had never been used as a cutting tool but could have been a poor copy of a palstave which had been used. -- AATA
