Abstract
In the Tuscany of the Medici many master woodworkers were employed in the dockyards of Pisa and Livorno where, between the end of the 16th and the first decades of the 17th centuries, special interest developed in the building of wooden ceilings. Such examples of Tuscan wood carving are to be found in Pisa cathedral, the church of the Knights of Saint Stephen, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo di San Silvestro, and the Palazzo della Madonna dei Galletti. The phenomenon also involved nearby Livorno, but the ceilings built there were unfortunately all destroyed during the World War II.
