The brief article considers and illustrates examples of the principal wooden roof systems for buildings in western Europe, with particular reference to the development of the inverted ship-bottom vault and of the framed ceiling. Cites examples from Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Holland, England, Norway and, especially France. Stresses the importance of a systematic study of these structures, aimed at safeguarding, restoration and conservation.
