Abstract
Three new samples of manganese-based minerals have been collected from the Lascaux cave. They were found on the Paleolithic clay floor, covered and protected by a thick layer of white calcite. The largest of the samples is pencil-shaped. Its elongated shape suggests that it was fashioned specially to be used directly on the wall. That it was not used is, however, evident from the absence of superficial scratches or striations. The other samples are composed of the same type of manganese mineral, already identified by the term wad, which is rare at the surface of geological substrata in France, and has some peculiar physical and mechanical properties such as low density, high closed porosity, as well as good malleability, cohesion and spreading. All in all, these properties facilitate the use of the pigment on the rock wall.
