The author has compiled opinions on factors affecting paper permanence, methods of determining durability, and methods of accelerated aging. Discussed are: humid, dry and sealed-tube heat-aging; activation energy and the Arrhenius relation; relationships between natural and accelerated aging; factors involved in deterioration of paper including hydrolysis, oxidation, photolysis, pH, crosslinking; and physical versus chemical measures of deterioration.
