Abstract
First the development in history from prior reconstructions of antique sculptures to their decomposition nowadays is critically reviewed. Both historical and aesthetic values of every piece of art have to be kept in mind, equally for the sculptural form and its polychrome embellishment. Regarding place and function, value and terms of meaning on the one hand and the different variations of damages on the other, several techniques of sculptural additions and polychrome retouchings are briefly listed. A number of actual restored sculptures, single ones, and likewise groups of stone, wood, stucco and metal are described and illustrated, dividing into six possible combinations of integration: 1) Conservation of the fragment state of volume and color, 2) Additions only to the structural form, 3) Only painting of missing forms, 4) Full integration of structure and polycromy, 5) Conservation of later additions, 6) Reconstruction of both points.
